Craigslist: how cagey should I be?
Hey folks. So I'm selling my volvo. We barely need one car here in Davis, so we're selling the second to save on insurance and...um, parking. Anyway, I've posted it on Craigslist and have already gotten a couple replies. The thing is, the replies, for the most part, have all the quality of a crappy chat forum talking about celebrities. There's no hello, no introduction. Most of the emails have been along the lines of, "call (phone number) abut car or send address" and then a name.
The Lit snob in me is appalled, but the slightly Net-savvy pragmatist understands that this may just be the shape of things. On the other hand, Craigslist makes a big deal about watching out for scams and such along with worries about which payment forms to avoid. So I'm all set to say no to money orders or cashier's checks (jeez, what *should* I accept?), but all that has made me paranoid. Should I interpret a cagey, furtive reply of interest as coming from an undesirable that's out to get and/or screw me? Have any of you dealt with Craigslist (from either end) and can give me advice on how picky to be? Is poor grammar a sign of nefarious intent or should I just suck it up and be resigned to text-speak being a common form of discourse with this thing?
