OVERVIEW:

Activision breaks from it's acclaimed World War II shooters to put players into the modern roles of new SAS recruit Sergeant "Soap" MacTavish and USMC Sergeant Paul Jackson. COD4 does an excellent job with pacing by switching between these two soldiers when the mission changes. As MacTavish, your missions are usually covert with just a handful of team members sneaking around by moonlight. With Jackson, you, your platoon, and your tanks are rolling through some fictional Middle Eastern city dodging automatic gun fire and RPGs from rooftops and windows in broad daylight. Toss in a couple of rail shooter sequences (including a very memorable one as the gunner in an AC-130), and you have one of the most fun FPS's this year.
The story begins with an assassination of a pro-western Middle Eastern President of some un-named country by extremists working with a Russian ultra-nationalist bent on the destruction of the West (aren't they all). The SAS missions focus on chasing down the ultra nationalists in Eastern Europe as where the USMC missions hunt for a nuclear device somewhere in the Middle East being held by the President's assassins. COD4 weaves the story lines together very well with a nice mid-game plot twist. The last few missions show a joint venture between the two teams resulting in some funny beer-comparison banter.
The game is very linear and short, but you don't get an artificial feeling about it and the length didn't feel insulting. Don't even look at the minimum system requirements since you're going to want all of the graphics glory this game offers including your squad leader's face lighting up in the back of a blackhawk when he puffs on his cigar.
