Paranormal Activity.
so, here's the deal: Paramount is apparently deciding, or at least testing the theory, that the triangle is a decent testing grounds. as a result, i just caught a screening of a movie i'd never heard of (though that qualifier doesn't mean much.) and while i'm not much of a moviegoer, -or- much of a critic, i'm interested in at least putting some thoughts out somewhere, especially if it helps bring more opportunities for me to see free movies. :P
the camera. usage is interesting. it's even part of the story, that the characters are using the camera. it's not shaky cam, it's pretty honest home video cam. i do feel some measure of disbelief in the usage, occasionally in a pedantic practical manner (videoing yourself watching previous footage?) but more notably in the choice of using it. i mean, really? you're gonna come back for the camera? however, they do a pretty good job of making the lead male that kind of character, so while it seems stupid to me, it does fit.
the (human) cast. does really well. all both of them. no, seriously, they do a -really- believable job of making it seem like a real couple, not some fake movie crap. oh, and i guess there were a couple other human cast members, who each got about 5 minutes of screen time.
the story. is sort of slow to get started. i mean, you really kinda feel like you're just watching this couple on a reality tv show for a little while. some of it was rather funny to see on the screen, i think partly just because it was so true to life. our theater laughed a fair amount through numerous parts. we also had a few people talking to the screen, and.. i'm not convinced that detracted from the experience any.
the effect. is certainly there. quite capable of giving one the willies. i'm not really much of a thriller fan; i don't really enjoy that sensation.
the verdict. is pretty good. a lot of the time, it didn't feel like a movie, which is both good and bad, but very well done. the style makes the beginning drag a bit, but it works for the film. i think i'd give it a pretty positive review, and might even recommend it if i were more keen on the genre.
